How to Choose a Ring for Engagement Ring That Matches Your Partner's Personality

The journey to finding the perfect engagement ring is a significant milestone in anyone's life. It's not just about the dazzling gemstone or the elegant band; it's a symbol of the unique bond you share with your partner. To truly make this moment memorable, selecting a ring for engagement that aligns with your partner's personality is key. In this guide, we'll walk you through the art of choosing a ring for engagement that speaks volumes about your loved one's character and style.

Observe Their Style: Before you dive into the world of engagement rings, take some time to observe your partner's fashion choices. Do they lean towards classic elegance, modern minimalism, or something more eclectic? Does she have a favorite color that she wears everyday?  If so maybe consider a colored gem like a Montana Sapphire.  Does all her jewelry have the same color gold? Then you can easily choose gold for the engagement ring color. Is your partner very classic and traditional, then one of our ethically sourced natural diamonds would be a perfect choice for her. Is she a minimalist in her style, then you can go with a smaller diamond say 1 carat or under. Is she more into the Boho style, then one of our hammered engagement rings with a Salt & Pepper Diamond maybe a good fit. By understanding her preferred style, you'll be better equipped to select a ring that she will love and cherish and smile everytime she looks at her hand!

Reflect on Her Interests: What does she love to do? Is she always at the beach or ready to go for a hike, then you may want to consider a stronger setting with a low profile to weather the adventures ahead. Does she wear gloves for work, then you should definitely consider a low profile setting even a bezel setting is great for ladies that wear gloves for work! Consider your partner's hobbies, passions, and interests. Are they a wine enthusiast, art lovers, or history buffs? Then you can likely go with a more delicate setting if she is super careful with her jewelry and there will be light wear and tear from day to day. These interests can provide valuable clues as well for selecting a ring design that captures their essence. For instance, a nature-inspired ring might feature a beautiful hammered texture. Or for the beach lovers, did you know that we can actually imprint sand from your favorite beach, alot of couples do this for the wedding bands (so keep that in mind for the future, now is just the ring for engagement!)

Metal Matters: The choice of metal for the ring band is essential. Some people have strong metal preferences based on their skin tone and personal style. Pay attention to whether your partner wears more gold, silver or white metals, or other colors like rose gold, as this can guide your decision. Also for some ladies they can actually be allergic to 14k white gold because of the nickel in the metal. Platinum is the only metal that is truly hypoallergenic, it's also classic and timeless. For the yellow golds 14k gold is the most commonly seen in engagement rings, and also the most mellow or lightest color of gold. 18k yellow gold is amazing and my personal favorite, it's such a rich color of gold like something you would pull up from a treasure chest at the bottom of the sea, also it's typically only seen in luxury jewelry lines, so all the more unique. Or if she is into more of a pink metal then Rose Gold would be a great choice, it's a very romantic color and more trendy.

Gemstone Significance: Gemstones hold special meanings and symbolism. If your partner has a favorite gemstone or birthstone, incorporating it into the ring can add a personal touch. I always tell people make sure it's her favorite color, after all her engagement ring is one that she will be wearing every day so it needs to go well with her daily style. If you do want to go with a colored gemstone for the engagement ring stay away from opals and moonstones, or other really soft gemstones, while they are gorgeous and fun for a right hand occasional ring, they can't hold up to the wear and tear for an engagement ring that is worn daily. A great choice for a colored gemstone engagement ring is a Sapphire which comes in so many colors not just blue, teal, purple, pink, orange, yellow, green, gray etc. Also a Sapphire is a 9 on the hardness scale so just under a diamond which is a 10. A few others that aren't quite a durable as they are between 7-8 on the hardness scale would be tourmaline, morganite or rutilated quartz.

Envision the Setting: The setting style can significantly influence the overall look of the ring. Consider whether your partner prefers a simple dainty engagement ring setting or an elaborate, intricate design with pave diamonds or a hidden halo. The setting sets the stage for the center stone and contributes to the ring's overall charm. Also with the setting consider if she has asked for things like a solitare or stacking diamond wedding rings, maybe she likes a low profile setting. It's great to have some conversations with her to get a feel for what she really wants, and I can guarantee you it's not the ring your mom has from the mall jewelry store.

Shape Speaks Volumes: The shape of the center stone can convey a lot about your partner's personality. Round diamonds for the classic girl, princess cut diamonds for the lover of modern or geometric things, oval diamonds are great for a classic but more romantic unique timeless look, or for the boho bride one of our most popular diamond shapes is the Josephine elongated hexagon, and cushion are for the lady that loves a soft timeless look with a unique flair. And these are just a few diamond shape options, there are so many more... And to add a bit more choice we work with master diamond cutters that can even custom cut the diamond for you! Talk about a unique engagement ring with a custom cut diamond!  Think about their preferences and choose a shape that resonates with them, or when in doubt just ask!!

Seek Input from Her Inner Circle: If you're unsure about your partner's preferences, consider seeking advice from their close friends or family members. I can almost bet you they have tagged them on instagram for their favorite engagement ring she has been dreaming of, or even sent her best friend screen shots! Sometimes they tell there mom, but mom's are from a different jewelry generation where everyone was getting the tall 4 prong solitare from the mall jewelry store, and the mom's and grandmas sometimes don't understand that engagement rings can be so unique, a Salt & Pepper Diamond, oh my!  They might provide insights that could guide your decision and help you choose a ring that perfectly matches their personality. Or maybe she makes it easy for you and tells you exactly what she wants and the designer to make it. We hear this all the time, my girlfriend has been following you on Instagram for years, she has been tagging me and sending me screenshots of Melissa Tyson Designs engagement rings, so I knew I had to come to you to create it!

Budget Wisely: While it's tempting to go all out, it's important to set a realistic budget for the engagement ring. Gone are the days of saving up 3 months of your salary for the engagement ring. There are stunning options available at various price points, we have plenty of rings under $5000 and even under $3000 for our moissanite collection. The average price for an engagement ring these days is around $6500. But depending on your diamond and budget we create rings all the way up to $50,000.
