All You Need to Know About Lab-Created Diamonds: The Sustainable Choice

2ct Round Lab Diamond Stacking Engagement Ring Set

While natural diamonds have long been the popular choice for engagement rings and other fine jewelry, many consumers are now turning to lab-created diamonds as a more sustainable alternative.

What exactly are lab-created diamonds?

These diamonds are created in a laboratory setting using advanced technological processes that replicate the natural diamond-forming conditions that occur deep within the Earth's mantle. In essence, lab-created diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically the same as natural diamonds - the only difference is that they are created in a controlled environment rather than being mined from the earth. There are two main methods for producing lab-created diamonds: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). HPHT diamonds are created by subjecting a small diamond seed to extremely high temperatures and pressures in a controlled environment, causing the carbon atoms to crystallize and form a diamond around the seed. CVD diamonds, on the other hand, are created by placing a diamond seed in a vacuum chamber and introducing a gas that contains carbon. The gas is then heated, causing the carbon atoms to bond with the diamond seed and form a larger diamond. Despite being created in a lab, lab-created diamonds offer many of the same benefits as natural diamonds.

Do people buy lab diamonds for their engagement rings?

YES! A resounding yes, they are as popular as their natural earth mined counterparts, because of their beauty and also their price. This makes them a popular choice for the modern bride looking for a high-quality, consistent, and sustainable diamond.

What is the cost benefit to a lab diamond?

In addition to the ethical benefits of choosing a lab-created diamond, there is also a cost benefit to consider. Lab-created diamonds are quite a bit less expensive than a natural diamonds. Depending on the diamond they can be half the price or even less that a comparable natural diamond in carat, color and clarity! Because lab-created diamonds are created in a controlled environment, they are often more consistent in terms of color and clarity than natural diamonds. This means that you can get a much larger, higher-quality diamond for the same price as a smaller, lower-quality natural diamond. Overall, the cost benefit of choosing a lab-created diamond over a natural diamond makes them a smart choice for couples who want a high-quality diamond without breaking the bank.

Are lab diamonds graded and certified?

Yes again! Just like natural diamonds, lab-created diamonds are graded and certified based on their quality and characteristics. The grading and certification process is important not only for determining the quality and value of the diamond but also for ensuring authenticity. Lab-created diamonds are graded using the same 4 Cs (carat weight, color, clarity, and cut) as natural diamonds. The GIA or IGI provides grading reports that include details on the diamond’s 4 Cs, as well as other important information such as fluorescence and symmetry. In conclusion, lab-created diamonds are graded and certified using the same standards as natural diamonds.
